The pedestrian street that climbs from Syntagma towards Kolonaki is Athens' luxury row, with international fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton and Hermès, fine jewellers and watchmakers, all within a few minutes' walk of the Hotel Grande Bretagne. Syntagma is the heart of modern Athens, around the square facing the Parliament, where the Evzones guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; Ermou, the main shopping street, and the National Garden start here, and the metro runs straight to the airport. Shops in central Athens usually open Monday to Saturday, with longer hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, while many in Plaka and Monastiraki also open on Sundays.
