Syros: the real, elegant capital of the Cyclades
Syros is unlike any other island in the Cyclades. Its capital, Ermoupoli, is a real working town of marble squares, neoclassical mansions and a little opera house, home to people all year round rather than just in summer. It is less about beach parties and boutique hotels and more about culture, food and everyday Greek life, which makes it a refreshing and very rewarding stop.

Ermoupoli: grandeur by the sea
Arriving by sea is a highlight: pastel mansions and church domes rise from the harbour on two hills. Built in the 19th century, when Syros was the greatest port in Greece, Ermoupoli has a grandeur rare in the islands. Its heart is Miaoulis Square, a vast marble square where families, children and friends gather at the cafés under the palm trees in the evening, below the magnificent town hall by Ernst Ziller.

Peek inside the Apollon Theatre, a jewel box of red and gold modelled on the opera houses of Italy, then walk down to the Vaporia quarter, where shipowners’ mansions have steps leading straight into the sea. Swimming from the rocks below the church of Agios Nikolaos, then having coffee in a grand square an hour later, is one of the special pleasures of Syros. Evenings are sociable rather than wild: cocktails at Jar, Greek wines at Mammo by the harbour, or a nightcap at Porte.
Ano Syros
On the hill above, Ano Syros is a medieval maze of white lanes and steps, founded by the Venetians in the 13th century, climbing to the Catholic cathedral of Agios Georgios. It is quiet, atmospheric and best at sunset, when the views over Ermoupoli and the sea are wonderful.
Sunset beaches
The beaches are on the west and south coasts, all easy to reach by bus: Kini, famous for its sunsets, with fish tavernas on the water; Galissas, a horseshoe of golden sand shaded by tamarisks; Vari, a sheltered bay for families; and Agathopes, with turquoise water and an islet just offshore.
Our advice: Syros is one of the best islands to visit outside the peak summer months, because it is lived in all year. Base yourself in Ermoupoli for culture, restaurants and ferries, or in Kini for sunsets and the beach. Don’t leave without trying loukoumi, the island’s famous sweet.
With fast ferries from Piraeus in about two hours and short flights from Athens, Syros is perfect for a long weekend or as the first stop on an island hop.
