Folegandros island guide

A white village on the edge of a cliff, tree-shaded squares, turquoise coves and the most romantic sunsets in the Cyclades: Folegandros is a little island of pure beauty. Here is our pick of where to swim, eat and stay.

Island feature

Folegandros: small, unspoilt and made for slowing down

Folegandros is the island people whisper about: small, steep and unspoilt, with one of the most spectacular villages in Greece perched on the edge of a cliff. There are no big resorts and no airport, and life moves at a gentle pace from the morning coffee in a shady square to the evening walk up to the church on the hill. For couples and anyone who wants peace and beauty, it is close to perfect.

Chora: a village on the edge of a cliff

Chora lines the very edge of a sheer cliff high above the sea, and its heart is a chain of little squares shaded by trees, full of tavernas and cafés. By day it is calm and sleepy; in the evening the squares fill with people, the smell of grilled food and the murmur of conversation, and the mood is warm and sociable rather than loud. Wander into the medieval Kastro quarter, where the houses form the cliff-edge wall and bougainvillea tumbles over the doorways.

The evening walk

Every evening, a zigzag path climbs from Chora to the white church of the Panagia on the hill above. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and the view over the village, the cliffs and the endless blue Aegean at sunset is unforgettable. Afterwards, come back down for dinner under the trees, perhaps with a cocktail at Rakentia or Beez first.

The beaches

Folegandros has beautiful beaches but very few facilities. Katergo, a spit of pebbles between two turquoise bays, is a short boat ride from the port of Karavostasi; Livadaki is a gorgeous cove below wild cliffs; and Agali has a sandy bay with fish tavernas and a path over the headland to Agios Nikolaos. In the rural north, Ano Meria is the place to try matsata, the island’s handmade pasta.

Our advice: the island is steep and many beaches are reached by paths or boats, so bring good shoes, water and shade. Rooms are limited and the best ones book up early for summer. A scooter is plenty for getting around. Ferries are less frequent than to the bigger islands, so plan your connections and allow a spare day.

With fast ferries from Piraeus in about four hours, Folegandros is the island for beauty, peace and romance.
