A whole city block of shopping beside Syntagma, built around attica department store and the elegant interwar Spyromiliou Arcade, with boutiques, cafés such as Clemente VIII, restaurants and historic theatres under one roof. Syntagma is the heart of modern Athens, around the square facing the Parliament, where the Evzones guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; Ermou, the main shopping street, and the National Garden start here, and the metro runs straight to the airport. Shops in central Athens usually open Monday to Saturday, with longer hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, while many in Plaka and Monastiraki also open on Sundays.
