The old gasworks of Gazi lit up at night, now the Technopolis arts centre

Neighbourhood guide · Athens, Greece

Gazi & Kerameikos

A former gasworks district turned into the city's clubbing and live-music quarter, next to an ancient cemetery and the arty streets of Metaxourgeio.

About Gazi & Kerameikos

Gazi takes its name from the old gasworks that lit Athens from the 19th century until 1984. The complex of brick chimneys and furnaces has been restored as Technopolis, a cultural centre run by the City of Athens that hosts concerts, exhibitions and festivals.

Around it, the streets near Kerameikos metro station fill up at night with bars, clubs and live-music venues, making Gazi one of the liveliest late-night areas in the city. It has long been the centre of Athens' LGBTQ+ nightlife too.

Across the road lies ancient Kerameikos, the main cemetery of ancient Athens, with graceful funerary sculpture and a small museum, quietly overlooked by most visitors. To the north, Metaxourgeio is an up-and-coming district of galleries, street art and neighbourhood tavernas.
