Monastiraki & Psyrri
Flea markets and ancient ruins by day, rooftop bars and packed little streets by night: the lively, slightly chaotic heart of central Athens.
About Monastiraki & Psyrri
Monastiraki Square is one of the busiest spots in the city, framed by an 18th-century Ottoman mosque, the small Pantanassa church and a classic view of the Acropolis. Around it are the remains of Hadrian's Library and the Roman Agora, and the flea market streets around Ifestou, busiest on Sundays, where you can browse antiques, vinyl, leather sandals and bric-a-brac.
Just north, Psyrri is a former working-class quarter of small workshops that now buzzes with tavernas, mezze bars, street art and late-night bars around Iroon Square. Walk up Athinas Street to the Central Market (Varvakios Agora) to see the meat and fish halls in full cry on a weekday morning.
To the west, Thiseio has a pedestrian promenade with cafés facing the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora, and Irakleidon Street is lined with bars. The rooftop bars around Monastiraki are the classic place to watch the sun set behind the Parthenon.
